ATA Carnet questions

Answers to common questions.

What is an ATA Carnet?

An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that lets you temporarily export goods to another country without paying import duties or VAT, as long as the goods return within the validity period.

What goods can an ATA Carnet cover?

Commercial samples, professional equipment and goods for exhibitions or trade fairs are typically eligible, covering categories like film, music, tools and machinery.

Which countries accept ATA Carnets?

Over 80 countries and territories are part of the ATA Carnet system. We'll confirm coverage for your specific destination before you travel.

How long does an ATA Carnet last?

An ATA Carnet is valid for up to 12 months from the date of issue. However, the permitted period of use may be shorter depending on the security cover and the time limit set by customs in the destination country. We can advise you on the requirements for your specific journey.

Can I use one Carnet for multiple trips?

Yes. A single Carnet can be used for repeat trips to one or more countries within its validity period, as long as the listed goods match each movement.

What happens when I return to the UK?

The Carnet must be stamped and closed at customs on your return, confirming all listed goods have come back, so the movement is completed correctly.
